INSTRUCTIONS

SUBMISSION

Recap for Task 3: After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation.

First of all, I would like to find some visual references on the Internet. Because of my UNSDG Goals is Gender Equality and Empower All Girls and Women, I have decided that the main character of my 3 sketches are surrounding with the character of a mother. These are my sketches:

Sketch 1# Illustration - Strong Women and Housewife
Figure 1.1 Sketch#1
I decided to use a style of design that features a contrasting illustration to show how a lady becomes a mother. A businesswoman is seen in the upper part of the image, representing her life before to becoming a mother. Women often go through several career high points and feel more confident at this stage. For some, though, being a mother represents a big change. Many women decide to give up their jobs to become housewives after having children. Their careers become secondary to taking care of the family and taking care of the children. As a result, they are financially dependent on their partners and no longer have a source of income, which causes the family to lose its independence. Thus, I decided to draw an image of a housewife for the rest half the part. The design principles will use in this sketch are balance, contrast and harmony.

Sketch 2# Cover Book - I Used To Be A Child
Figure 1.4 Sketch#2
The main character in this sketch is a mother who is already a parent. A woman is shown playing joyfully with her child on the left side of the artwork. This is a time that all mothers feel incredibly grateful for. On the other hand, by emphasizing the picture of a young girl, I would emphasize my message—that every mother was once a kid. The mother's childhood, when she would wear a lovely floral blouse and have carefree days, is represented by this young girl. Every mother, in my opinion, still has within her a feeling of innocent amazement. However, they might not always be able to express it because of life's circumstances. There are 3 design principles for this sketch, which is word, contrast and unity.

My goal with the third drawing is to illustrate the difficulties a woman encounters after becoming a mother. They could frequently have the impression of being imprisoned. They receive constant criticism in the form of unpleasant remarks like "Ugly woman," "Too fat," and "Lazy woman," among others. Mothers are attacked by these harsh comments, which make them feel helpless. They have valid reasons for not changing their life, but it doesn't seem like anyone is open to hearing them out. The main character, to whom I am referring from the movie "Adam," illustrates a mother's mental journey in the meantime. This story strongly relates to my design's subject. Harmony, word and balance are the design principles that I used in this sketch.

I have made the decision to use this sketch for my final project. But first, I want to make some changes to the mother, who is the major character, in terms of concept and design. Additionally, I go to a different design style that I have never tried before, starting with "Red Booklet" to locate some references. I am going to use simple lines to highlight each piece in my cover book design.

1. Visual Reference
Aside from that, the artwork "Mother Touch" by SunLee Art serves as my last task's design reference. It created each character's outline using a simple form. This piece of art (figure 1.13) similarly uses a simple color palette with a deeper color to create shadows. It conveys the difference between light and dark.
2. Design
In addition, to bring back the references from Sketch #2, I choose to highlight the focal point of the entire design with a beam of laser light. The main idea behind this design is that a mother had her share of  memories. When she was younger, she followed her aspirations and shone brightly on stage. But if turn back to real life, she will facing on her child and trouble in life. This is my first digital sketch for my task, I start to fill up with wolour after finished my sketch.

Filling Colour
I decided to go with a Morandi color palette in my artwork. This color palette gained popularity in the 20th century and was first popularised by Italian painter "Giorgio Morandi". This is the reason these colors are named "Morandi". These colors are not particular hues, rather, they are referred to as low-saturation colors with a color of grey. Morandi colors may convey a unique perception and warmth, these hues are becoming more common in fashion design. (Sunica, 2023)

Subsequently, this design holds significance as it may be associated with this figure. The hour hand is still going ahead, and the clock shows that it is already 1:35 o'clock. It indicates that a mother's age continues to increase and that time is gradually consuming every part of a mother.

To finish, I want to add a light beam that highlights the pattern in the lower right corner. However, I'm not sure if using a darker backdrop to highlight the light is actually necessary. I'll get some feedback from our lecturer after this. I created a gradient for the long skirt—which can be related to the third figure in this section to add extra details.

After that, I have made some changes in response to our lecturer's feedbacks. I started by adjusting the light's position. I was asked by our instructor where the light layer should be placed behind every image. In addition, "I Used To Be" has to be replaced. It may be positioned to follow the light like a line.

In addition, our lecturer advised me to think about changing to a font type that might work better with my design. He suggested that I attempt to design a new typeface using the method I was taught in last semester's typography class.

After that, I select "Charm" as the font type for the title and "Arima Madurai" as the font type for the author's name. Additionally, I incorporate a 3D effect into the title to give it a more hierarchical appearance.
Figure 1.28 Final Outcome 3
I made the final change based on the recommendations that our lecturer provided. I added some light and shadow to the mirror showing the dressed women on stage, and I changed the backdrop hue to a shade of blue. This, then, is the outcome for this assignment.
Final Outcome

Rationale:
The book's cover "I Used To Be" design depicts a mother who once had a shining belief but that dream was dashed by reality after becoming a mother. To care for her child, she was forced to give up her dream to become an aspiring singer. I thus decided to sketch a brilliant light beam flashing on the picture that depicts her standing on the stage. The clock in the upper left corner is currently showing 1:35 and will continue to rise with a mother's age. Time will consume all parts of a mother. This artwork aimed to convey the bitterness of a mother. They give up a lot for their child and dedicate the remainder of their lives to them. It conveys how empowered women are. Even though they will be unable to change the situation, they persist.
Unity is the first design principle I use. It is related to the "Morandi" color palette that I used in this design. The color of the light that shines on the picture in the bottom left corner expresses the design principle of contrast. Lastly, I've incorporated the book cover title, which lines up with the light rays, to illustrate the main concepts of this design. The presence of the words in my work is to highlight the hierarchy of the design.

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Mr. Zeon mentioned that while my first sketch is nearly ideal, the design is an ordinary one. I will lose a few points if my design isn't outstanding. He likes sketch #2 a lot overall; the concept and substance are sound, and the way my elements are distributed is well done. When he asked me to select one, I went with sketch #2.
Week 7: This week, Mr. Zeon suggested placing the layer of light behind the subjects in drawing. It is also possible to align the title with the direction of the light beams. Additionally, he advised me to switch to a font type that would work better with this design. Perhaps I could design a new typeface that I've learned and include it in my design. After I sent my blog link to our lecturer's email to ask for feedback, he asked me to incorporate design principles into each sketch. For the further reading part, please includes the articles that I have read, but not the source link for my reference images.

REFLECTION
In this task, I was asked to design and construct my own work by applying the theories that I've learnt from the past five weeks. Initially, I have came up with a lots of ideas for my work, however, I need to give up most of them due to immature drawing skills as well as lacking of the techniques to digitalised my work using Adobe Illustrator. Therefore, in order to complete my work successfully, I've updated the progress to Mr Zeon and making amendments according to his feedbacks. Besides, I read a lot of articles through online to deepen my knowledge in design principles. To further improve my comprehension, I also go through a few websites that are linked to design concepts. Finally, this assignment has been concluded flawlessly.
