Project 01: Animated Infographic Poster

Description:
After time exploring media and learning about information design, you will now develop an infographic that presents a series of different processes as visuals rather than text.

Requirement:
  • Your main intention is to analyze the “delivery mechanisms” that affect the outcomes of your infographics
  • Though content is important, however, the aim of this presentation is to look at what makes an infographic presentation work or does not work. This includes content but only as one of the many components of an infographic:
PART 1: Infographic poster (10%)
Instructions:
1. Choose 1 infographic poster reference from Internet (Please consult before proceed)
2. Redesign the poster into A4 size. Sketch the idea and process
3. Redesign and simplify the poster based on visual hierarchy & typography
4. Simplify the poster's design based on color, shape & pattern
5. Attach your final poster on E-Portfolio with explanation and reflective writing

PART 2: Minimal animated infographic (10%)
Instructions:
1. Animate your infographic poster into one static loop animation page
2. Loop duration in between 15-30 second
3. Size: 1080 x 1920 px (Vertical Video) upload to your own Youtube channel

Submission:
1. Digital upload into your Google Drive.
2. Online posts in your E-Portfolio and your reflective writing.
(Please attach the E-Portfolio link here for submission.)

PART 1: Infographic poster
To start this task, I might want to choose a reference from Pinterest and redesign the poster. The posters that I selected are shown below:

I chose these posters because they present interesting content and use various graphs to convey information. Additionally, rearranging the layout and adding animations would make it even more engaging. The information also caught my interest, and I have some ideas for bringing it to life through animation.

I decided to choose the third poster and redesign it. To start redesigning the poster, I first summarize the information and put it into the artboard in Adobe Illustrator. I also used Photoshop to crop images of cats' growth.

I started designing the background and typesetting of my poster. I decided to use a color in purple to make it more interesting. Here is my progress:

I realized the background was too plain, so I added a purple grid design, which instantly enhanced the overall look of my poster.

Although I've done 2-3 versions of the poster, but the better one is this one, so I refine it and proceed to the second part, which is animating the poster.

PART 2: Minimal animated infographic
I did the animation in Adobe After Effects, since we learned it before, so it will make my work easier. Here is my progress:

Although I only created simple animations, such as adjusting opacity and making the cat’s tail swing, I felt that attempting more complex animations wouldn’t be worth it, especially since I hadn’t used the app in a long time.

REFLECTION

In my Information Design Project 01, I attempted to redesign an infographic poster to make it easier to comprehend and more visually appealing. I started by choosing a reference poster that had some graphs in it and tried to enhance its design as well as animations for better interactivity. Using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, I determined the most important information and organized it in the artboard. My original design had a blue theme, and through several revisions, I incorporated a purple grid background to make it more dynamic in visual composition. In this way, I learned how much background elements affect the overall look, resulting in a more integrated design.

I also tried Adobe After Effects to introduce some subtle animations, like opacity changes and animating tiny details like the tail of the cat, so that motion provided value and did not detract from the main content.

This project reaffirmed the value of iterative design and the impact of small visual adjustments in developing an effective and appealing infographic. It also highlighted the need to balance creativity and technical delivery to produce an appealing final product.
