IVN_01_Char Design Basics
Through these lectures, we should know that stylized design may be the reason
why you find these characters appealing.
- ICONIC: Stylized designed characters are often iconic that you can
immediately recognize them even in black silhouettes.
- SIMPLICITY: This is because the simplicity of the design allows
viewers to digest and understand the purpose of the characters easily.
- UNIQUE: Which in return makes them unique characters that are not
only memorable, but makes an impact on the viewers.
1.1 PRINCIPLES OF CHARACTER DESIGN
1. Shape
Shapes design a character's silhouette. It's used to identify a character from one another.
2. Colour
Explore the possibilities of combining different interesting shapes for one's design. Add some weight to their personality, and use your character's persona as the basis of the shapes for one's design.
3. Emphasis
Establish the basic roles of the characters. Colours play an important role in determining and separating the basic characteristics of heroes, villains and even background characters. Different colours give impressions of different emotions and is easily relatable by the viewers.
4. Contras
A good character exaggerates the emphasis and contrasting visual elements to make
the design stand out by using colours and different shapes.
5. Harmony
All shapes, lines, colour, motifs, patterns must be put together in a
tasteful manner and how it reflects with the narrative of the characters.
THANK VISUAL HIERARCHY!
6. Expressions, Poses
Clear visualization of your character's behaviours, quirks, personalities
makes it easier to appeal to
your viewers.
IVN_02_CHIAROSCURO
What is CHIAROSCURO?
The use of light and
dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. An
Italian term which means "light-dark". In paintings, the technique refers
to clear tonal contrast
to suggest three-dimensional volume and modeling of objects and figures.
Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio were known to use this technique in
their artworks.
The purpose of
CHIAROSCURO is to increase the scene's dramatic tension by exaggerating the subject's
importance using colors or light contrast. The application of CHIAROSCURO
is as follows:
1. Tenebrism, a certain type of painting method in which significant details such as
faces and hands are illuminated by highlights that are contrasted with a
predominantly dark setting.
2.
Visual Artworks, such as comics, film, and digital works - this is an artistic lighting
choice in which the focus point or subject of a
scene is brightly coloured.
3. Low Key Lighting, A style of lighting for photography, film, or television. It accentuates the contours of the subject by throwing areas into shade while a fill light or reflector may illuminate the shadow areas to control contrast. The
scene is contrasted with a dark background. You can see this in screen lighting for movies where they use lights to
create emotional and impactful scenes. Coppola and Kubrick are known to use this approach in their movies and these scenes are the
most memorable ones in screen media history.
CHIAROSCURO is used in visual narrative because.........
It's an excellent lighting choice to differentiate Positive vs Negative
spaces. By:
1. Increase dramatic tension
Give thrilling emotive depth to the look and feel of the scene
2. Create sensational effect
Helps elevate fantastical viewpoints to emphasize the narrative
3. Attract attention
Establish visual hierarchy, the main point of the scene
4. Make a tasteful composition
The play on negative VS positive spaces creates attractive scenes.
Positive Space: the subject matter or object of interest in a visual
Negative Space: the filled space or background that surrounds
the subject matter or object of interest in visual

COMPOSITION IN DESIGN
Composition in design simply means the arrangement of the elements in
visual.
"You decide how to arrange the objects that are in your frame."
For example, each time you take a photo, you end up making conscious
decisions about what items to include or exclude.
The most challenging part of composition is how to arrange the elements in
your visual effectively - and the answer is
"to arrange them in a way that brings out meaning." Your composition shots should consciously arrange the focus of the scene to
stand out, even in the subtlest manner.
The Basic Composition Visual Rule
Visual Narrative, Visual Flow, Visual Balance, Visual Hierarchy
Visual Narrative is the visuals in the scene
that complement all aspects of the narrative.
Moving on, the Visual Flow is the scene that has
a clear flow of visuals that directs the viewer's eyes. Following is
the Visual Balance, in which the visual is arranged
to balance the composition of the scene. Lastly, the Visual hierarchy is arranged in such ways that
direct the viewer's eyes to specific details first.

Different Types of Shots:
Establishing, wide shots were
often used to establish not just the setting, but to portray spectacle and give audiences the chance to take in all the splendor and grandeur of a location, while still giving them enough information to process what's going on.
Bird's eye view, also known as
overhead shots, is
when the POV is placed directly above the subject. It's somewhere around a 90-degree angle above the scene taking place.
3. Frame within a frame, A
well-composed frame within a frame can
fracture screen space, add depth, and create visual interest in your cinematic compositions. Whether you choose to use foreground or background shapes to
create this effect, the technique of cinematic frame within a frame
can emphasize and highlight the underlying meanings within your story and break up
the information in your frame for maximum impact.
4. Medium shot, the shot is also called a three-quarters shot —which, obviously, frames three-quarters of the character. This is one of the standard camera angles used to frame a character. It's the shot in - between a close-up and a long shot.
5. Close-up & Worm's eye view, The
close-up is
an intimate moment of a look into a character’s mind. It cause us to “catch” emotions, so as the rest of the scene plays out we’re already invested in the characters’ well-being. Therefore, this type of shot should emphasize emotions and thoughts within a grander context.
Week_1_Info
-This was our first briefing exercise, we were required to complete the brezier game.
Figure 1.1 Info (25.09.2023)
Week_2_Vormator Shapes
- We had to draw the shapes above, and these shapes may be used to create our vormator, which one for the second exercise.

Task 1_Vormator Challenge
Exercise 1: Vormator Design
- I filled in the Vormator with only black and white in my first sketches for the Vormator challenge. I used the shapes our professor gave us to sketch with, and I also used the Internet to do some research.
Figure 2.1 Vormator Design (05.10.2023)
- These were a few examples that I looked up online. Several of the drawings caught my attention since they were so interesting and they made the Vormator appear vivid by using a variety of colors.

Exercise 2: Vormator Challenge of Pokemon Card
- In order to finish this part of the job, we had to apply our
knowledge of gradient, pathfinder, and tracing. I must admit that
before this, I was not using the Vormator that I had previously
designed. I had drawn a new character.

Figure 3.3 Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card (01.11.2023)
- Then I proceeded to create the character's shadows by tracing and
using the gradient. It looked better than the first sketches after
the adjustments.
Figure 3.4 Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card (01.11.2023)
- We had to use our own creativity to add the background for
the final project, so I also did online research to complete
my first sketches.
Figure 3.5 Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card (01.11.2023)
- I sent our lecturer the designs, he suggested that the
backdrop drawings be cut to the outlines the color was stronger
than the Vormator character color so it diverts attention.
After adjustment, my second sketches was done.
Figure 3.6 Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card (01.11.2023)
- However, I also made more designs the following day
because I felt that the background of my first sketches
was too plain and that certain important details were
missing.
Figure 3.7 Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card (02.11.2023)
- After discussing with my lecturer, I added a few
subtleties by using clipping mask regarding the
character and UFO. This was my final illustration.

- I also added this illustration into the Pokemon card
template

Task 2: Chiaroscuro
Exercise 1: Light and Shadow
- It had to be done for us to complete the pearl sketches, which
were required to show the item's light and shadows. We were given
instructions on how to use the Pathfinder tool in Illustrator for
this assignment, and we had to know how it worked.
Figure 4.1 Chiaroscuro (16.10.2023)
Exercise 2: Colours and blending mode
- To be quite honest, I took a very long time to finish
this activity. I was unable to complete the divide part
because I was consistently making mistakes in every section.
These were the procedures of my sketches.
Figure 4.2 Chiaroscuro (29.10.2023)
Figure 4.3 Chiaroscuro (29.10.2023)
Figure 4.4 Chiaroscuro (29.10.2023)
- After I had done my divide part, I would
required to add a texture into the sketches for the
clipping mask. I do the research by using FREEPIK page
and these were my research for the texture:

- Our lecturer's text seemed lovely and fairly suitable for our job, and we had to play the Brezier game the first week.
Week 2 :
- This week, as an extra to the lecturer's activity, we completed the Vormator shapes briefing. The lecturer said that the exercise had a good texture and looked lovely after I completed it.
- In the fourth week, we practiced the light and shadow practice. This activity was difficult for me, but the lecturer complimented me on my work and nice texture after I finished it.
Week 6:
- Our lecturer said that my Vormator Challenge Pokemon Card in the background removed the outlines and the color is stronger than the Vormator character color so it diverts attention. He also asked for added subtle textures. After adjustment, my Vormator Challenge Pokemon card looked good. Even though it took me quite a while, it's already finished.
- I have acquired a great deal of knowledge from our lecture. Our lecturer gave a neat and organized PowerPoint each week. Our instructor also provided a wealth of information on our module via PPT. Before having my class, I had no idea that every character made is in use of the vormator shapes. Until our lecturer explained it to us by giving examples in the class, and now I understand it better. Besides, one of the most significant lessons I took away from this class was that I was already proficient in Adobe Illustrator. We learned more about Adobe Illustration from our lecturer step-by-step, and we can simply get our problems resolved with the help of the lecturer in the Teams as well as WhatsApp groups directly. This is really helpful to me. In my opinion, this class gave me greater confidence to use Adobe Illustrator, and as of right now, I'm able to finish my tasks quickly.
