INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

IVN_04_Perspective

- In this lecture, we will learn about the composition theory. It is an article that represents three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other.
Figure 1.1 Construct Perspectives

One-point Perspective:
  • The most simple method to produce a three-dimensional illustration is by drawing objects emerging from a single point on the horizon.
  • This example has a point in the center that establishes the guideline and all objects recede toward this one point.
Figure 1.2 One-point Perspective

Two-point Perspective:
  • In this position, there are two points on the horizon and two sets of overlapping perspective lines. It will allow more dynamic views than that one point alone.
Figure 1.3 Two-point Perspective

Three-point Perspective:
  • After adding the two-point perspective, add another point high above or below the horizon. It is a useful way to achieve a sense of drama and scale or to show more objects.
  • It also gives a far broader range of angles, allowing others to "look down" into your city.

      IVN_05_Fore Mid and Background

      Figure 1.5 The Soloists Video

In the video, The Soloists fully utilized the shot compositions of foreground, middle ground, and background, which made the animation eye-popping and lively. A few video clips are being shown and discussed below respectively to show how well is the shot compositions of the animation.

      Figure 1.6 The Soloists

From the beginning of the video, where the main character, the 3 women in the gown are being shot in the middle ground, and more detailed shots of the building in the foreground tell us in which regions the story takes place. At the back of the main characters is the background which gives us information about how women are being unfairly treated in the region through the events that are prohibited to women.

      Figure 1.7 The Soloists

In this shot, the dog is really close to the woman is directly conveyed to the audience, with more details of the settings of the house at the back.

      Figure 1.8 The Soloists

Moving on to this shot, the audience is able to learn that this lady takes this performance much more preciously than the other 2 ladies. The background with many other letters also tells us it's not the first time their groups performed.

From the above example, I have learned about the importance of having the fore, middle, and background shots to make the shots cinematic. Besides, it's important to know that the more layers and complexity are in the shots, the more the audience is able to know from the shots.

      SUBMISSION

Briefing Exercise: Transparency gradient and noise
In this exercise, we were required to create textures by adding shading to our illustrations by using the Grain Effect combined with linear, radial, and freeform gradients.

      Figure 2.1 Gradient and Noice

      - This is the AI file that our lecturer provided, we need to choose one of these characters to do the texture exercise. I chose the second character who was wearing a coat.

      - After I completed applying the texture, my work was done.

      Project 02: The Decisive Moment

      - For this assignment, we must find a related article/story that discusses Urban Legends. The legends may be local or international. The art style must be derived from Art Deco. I had done a lot of research via Google about urban legends in different nations.
Figure 3.1 The Decisive Moment Research

Figure 3.2 The Decisive Moment Research

      - Although I had gone through these pages, I still didn't have any idea about this exercise. When I asked my friend for a recommendation, she told me that the Bunny Man urban legend. After that, I decided to take this topic for my work and also the baby blue urban legend.

Figure 3.3 The Decisive Moment Research

Figure 3.4 The Decisive Moment Research

Figure 3.5 The Decisive Moment Research

      - Bunny Man is an urban legend about a mental patient who escaped from a local asylum and found refuge in the woods around the bridge in Clifton, Virginia. Distraught by the murders of his wife and daughter, he remained in hiding and lived on wild rabbits to stay alive, leaving their half-eaten remains by the bridge. One year on Halloween, some children were hanging out near the bridge around midnight, and they were confronted by a man. He murdered them in a blind rage and hung their bodies on the bridge next to the dead rabbits. According to this story, I depicted my first sketches for these two urban legends.

Figure 3.6 The Bunny Man Sketches

      Figure 3.7 Baby Blue Sketches

      - Between these two sketches, I mostly like the Bunny Man one so I chose it for the following steps. But I thought my sketches still missed something, so I added the children who were being murdered by the Bunny Man.

Figure 3.8 The Bunny Man Sketches

      - After this, I would begin to fill in colors for my sketches. In this part, I added texture that was learned by the lecture in the background and the foreground. Besides, through the research, The Bunny Man was wearing bunny clothing which was like plush clothing. So I made a clipping mask #figure3.10 that I had learned before into the bunny cloth.

Figure 3.9 The Bunny Man Sketches

Figure 3.10 The Bunny Man Sketches

Figure 3.11 The Bunny Man Sketches

      - I sent my illustration to our lecturer on teams chat, and he commented that the shot needed to be tightened. After I made the adjustment, this was my second illustration.

Figure 3.12 The Bunny Man Sketches

      - Our lecturer still thinks that there was a lot of negative space in my illustration. So I needed to zoom into a medium shot, behind the shoulder, and also some overlaps for foreground midground and background. After the adjustment, my final work was done.

      Animation GIF

It was therefore necessary for us to create an animation for this artwork. My initial thought upon hearing the following step was to assume that the Bunny Man was approaching the kids with the intention of killing them. This concept nearly goes back to the origins of this urban legend. However, I can vividly recall our lecturer said that the animation should continue to loop. I thus abandoned carrying out this plan. I came out with another thought.

Figure 3.18 The Bunny Man Animation Sketches

This animation was created using Photoshop. I drew 27 frames for my first animation doodle. I still need to make a few modifications after I forwarded it to our instructor for comments. My GIF won't loop, our lecturer stated, so I'll have to consider resetting it each time. I had to ensure that my GIF's loop was smooth as a result. Another thought emerged in my mind at this time.

Figure 3.19 The Bunny Man Animation Sketches GIF

If my animation only the blood was dipping all the time, it would be too boring. So I decided to make a lightning to increase the sense of fear. I sent it to our lecturer, and he commented that I should have it darker, when there is lightning you can see more details, and the composition reveals more. I followed our lecturer's instructions to make some adjustments. This was my final work.

Figure 3.22 The Bunny Man Animation Sketches

For my final work, 26 frames had been created. In every frame, I set up for 0.1 seconds so that my final GIF only has 0.6 seconds. But it was good enough for my work.

      FEEDBACK

      Week 7 :
      - The story is OK. But the shot needs to be tightened.

      Week 8 :
      - There’s a lot of negative space. So zoom into a medium shot, behind the shoulder, and also some overlaps for foreground midground background

      Week 9 :
-The gif loops so you will have to think about it resetting every time. Will the loop look seamless? The GIF must loop seamlessly, where it ends will be where it will begin again.

      Week 10 :
      - Nice, but what's with the lightning thing? whatever it is maybe you should have it darker and when there is lightning you can see more details, and the composition reveals more.

      REFLECTIONS
      • This assignment was extremely interesting since it allowed us to apply our own imagination to create an illustration in addition to improving our Adobe Illustration abilities.  The shapes created in the last exercise columned the characters, however in this project, we can sketch the characters independently. I used every technique I had previously learned, including textures, knife tools, shadows, and clipping masks, in my final work. After finishing this project, I experienced a feeling of accomplishment. The Photoshop animation in the following portion would be more concerning. Make a GIF for the last part of this exercise. The most intriguing thing I anticipated was this. But since we had recently completed a GIF in typography class and it included the same techniques, I found it easier to create one. In the process of making this GIF, I also looked up information on lightning animation online. I was really intrigued by this since it was the most significant thing I had learned. I would make an effort to do better in the upcoming tasks.
