Digital Surrealism

Realism vs Surrealism

Realism:

Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

Surrealism:

A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream images, and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.

What is Digital Surrealism?

Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on the type of art to express the artist’s ideas themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start creating Surrealism artworks?

  • Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
  • Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
  • Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
  • Primitive or child-like designs

Mindset During Creation
  1. "Does this look real?"
  2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.
Photoshop makes it easier than ever to create surrealist images, requiring just a modicum of photomontage skill to produce impressive results.

PROJECT 2B: CONCEPTUAL PRODUCT PHOTOSHOOT

CATEGORY: CONCEPTUAL PRODUCT PHOTOSHOOT

1. Create a conceptual product photoshoot using various lighting techniques.
2. Find an interesting subject and shoot it using suitable lighting techniques.
3. Create a photo manipulation of the subject using Photoshop to make it interesting.
4. Explain the concept and the process of the development.

For the first step, we needed to do some research on the Internet. I completed this step via Pinterest, and there were a lot of interesting examples.

  1. Research

According to these references, I started finding something that could be combined in my home. After the class, I came out with many ideas and drew the sketches by using Procreate after they had been combined. We were required to bring our objects and take some shooting at the studio in the next class.

I preferred sketches 3 & 5. After I had tried to combine it in Photoshop, I thought that Sketch 5 didn't work because their sizes couldn't be matched. This was my first sketch after editing in Photoshop. Despite I used the skills that I had learned before, it still looked strange. These were my progress works:

I tried to adjust the cup's color and used brush tools to make it look more smoother. I would ask our lecturer for feedback on this section.

But before this, I also prepared another sketch. I used the idea of Sketch 3.

These were my processing works:

For the first step, I used quick select tools to select the subjects. Then press Select and Mask to make it as a new layer.

After that, I pasted the pen layer on the screwdriver's layer and masked it onto the screw driver. Fortunately, the pen was matched with the screwdriver.

I added a white background which was using the solid color that I had learned before. After adding the background, it looked better. I also renamed every layer so that it would be more orderly.

Next, I tried to adjust the brightness and contrast of my subjects. Pen: brightness -38 contrast 40.
Screw Driver: brightness -38 contrast 19.

For the next step, I was required to add a shadow of the subjects. I learned it at the Hearst Mansion exercise before, so I felt easier.

In the last step, I adjusted the curves and levels of the whole image. My final work was done.
